As a growing tourist destination, Canmore could now hold City status. With a population of about 12,000 permanent residents, and a "shadow" population of 5,000 in part time recreational residents, Canmore is growing at an average rate of about 6% per annum. Projections are for a maximum population of 30,000 about the year 2020. Despite the growth, we are still known as the small community with the big heart.
Has Canmore succeeded in keeping up with the demands, and formed a long term infrastructure that will support future growth? The answer, we think is "Yes". We see a controlled sustainable growth, while protecting our environment from impact and preserving it for future generations.
Hiking, biking and skiing trails lead out of Town into our great surroundings, the majestic mountain ranges, the rivers and streams, the lakes, and the forest with all its beauty. There are many trails to trek, many mountains to climb, many waters to float, many plants and animals to discover, many caves to explore, and many views to absorb. These contribute to enjoyable pastimes and a healthy lifestyle.
There is fun for everyone in this quiet small town atmosphere; renowned cuisine in many quaint restaurants, a brew pub, a full size public swimming pool, world class golf courses and ski hills nearby, the Canmore Nordic Center (cross country skiing and training facility), horseback riding, numerous art galleries exhibiting many quality local artists, museums and of course, our mining history.
Commercial growth? … "Yes;" while still maintaining our ‘small town’ flavour and holding onto a comfortable and a quality lifestyle.
Canmore, only 70 miles from Calgary, a major city and international airport.
